With more than 25 years of experience covering health, medicine and health policy for government contractors and agencies, associations and publications, Emily is skilled at navigating complexity, cutting through jargon, and delivering authoritative, effective, and clear articles, white papers, blog posts, reports, and more. She works collaboratively with clients and teams to come to consensus and arrive at communications solutions that meet their needs. She works on content for a variety of clients: divisions of the Department of Health and Human Services (such as the Administration for Community Living and several institutes, centers, and offices within the National Institutes of Health), nonprofit associations (such as the American Hospital Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the National Academy of Medicine), and healthcare organizations (Duke Health, HCA Healthcare).
In addition to running her business and writing career, Emily serves on the board of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and is currently president of the organization, which is the largest association of professional freelance writers in the country. Under her leadership, ASJA has transitioned from management by a large consultancy to overseeing a direct-hire executive director, nimbly adapting to changing market conditions and providing resources to writers to do the same.
Emily is a three-time winner of an International MarComm award for writing (platinum in 2021 and gold in 2022 and 2023) and a winner of the 2022 ASJA award for business-to-business communications.
What clients are saying
Emily’s excellent editing skills and her gift for interacting positively with writers would be of great benefit to any publisher or organization.
Emily is a talented and meticulous editor whose excellent organizational skills conquer even the tightest deadlines. As a writer, I appreciate her sharp eye for every detail that might improve the accuracy and quality of a manuscript. She’ll never waste your time with trivial questions. In addition, Emily’s calm manner and positive attitude make her a pleasure to work with.
Emily did a fantastic job of pulling together the literature on doctor patient communication and putting it into a coherent and highly readable story. I will be very happy to share the issue with colleagues and friends
Emily did an admirable job of condensing what might otherwise be complex material into a readable, and usable, story for practice-based physicians.
I found Emily’s writing clear, compelling and very professional throughout the publication. The book is comprehensive in scope and very well documented by references to important research studies.
It doesn’t take much for Emily to quickly grasp what we are trying to communicate and what we want to achieve with each project. She always seems to know what we want and delivers quality work in a timely manner that exceeds our expectations. She is personable, reliable, smart, and extremely talented at what she does. I don’t even consider using other writers anymore
Emily is a terrific writer. She has an ability to make patient-education pieces come to life. Her encouraging tone makes perilous disease states seem more manageable.
I can unequivocally say that working with Emily Paulsen on URAC’s three most recent white papers has been a pleasure. Emily worked with our communications team to develop the questions for interviews, and in many cases, she interviewed clients and thought leaders with minimal guidance from the URAC team. She was able to take the disparate input and weave it into a cogent narrative that resulted in exceedingly high-quality output. In fact, the last three white papers that URAC created with Emily’s expert input won MarCom Awards. Emily is professional, knowledgeable, self-directed and an asset to any team.

Emily is an invaluable resource and there is no greater proof of that than how often my client requested her by name for tasks and assignments. Emily brings professionalism, a deep knowledge of health topics and expertise across a variety of communications. She provided audience-tailored writing, thorough report editing, and engaging trainings for my team and my client’s teams. She’s a pleasure to work with and a true asset to any team.
